Old Black Train

lyrics

This morning, when I woke up,
Woke up, I woke up this morning
Waiting on an old black train
With a ticket I was holding

Cold was on the ground
And the sky was full of night
Cigarettes were tracing figure 8's
Through amber colored pints

The ticket man did reprimand
Son, you're far too young
This train'll take you to the end
And your trip has just begun

An engineer was singing, boys
Forget your worldly pride
You don't need no ego's
When the train pulls in tonight

The platform's full of faces
Worn and ruddy just like mine
A joke, a kick, a fistfight
People laughing all the time

'Till it's one foot on the platform
The other on the train
The conductor grabbed me by the neck
And I was never heard again

This morning, when I woke up,
Woke up, I woke up this morning
Waiting on an old black train
With a ticket I was holding

I wonder what they think of me
And What if they could know?
That at the end this old boy
Knew he never meant to go
